Clarinetista de jazz estadounidense y director de la banda más popular de la era del swing. Goodman formó una gran orquesta en 1934, usando arreglos de Fletcher Henderson. Se considera que la sensacional radiodifusión de la actuación de la orquesta en el salón de baile Palomar de Los Ángeles en 1935 es el comienzo de la era del swing. La banda de Goodman tenía como figuras estelares a los trompetistas Bunny Berigan, Ziggy Elman y Harry James y al baterista Gene Krupa, los que después formaron sus propias grandes orquestas. El pequeño grupo de Goodman estuvo entre los primeros conjuntos integrados racialmente conocidos por la gente. Su virtuosidad e inmensa popularidad le valió el apelativo de "el rey del swing.
